Prevention is better than drilling

A clean tooth rarely falls ill.

Practices offering prevention — added and maintained by our editors. All towns from A to Z.

The aim of dental prophylaxis – often called preventive dentistry – is to keep disease from arising in the first place. Tooth decay and periodontitis are among the most widespread diseases there are, and both can be avoided to a large degree.

Regular check-ups at the dental practice, matched to your own risk, together with good oral hygiene at home, make a substantial contribution to keeping your own teeth – well into old age.

Two sides of the same thing

Prophylaxis works only half at the practice. Professional cleaning removes what has been left behind at home; daily oral hygiene decides how much that is in the first place. Together they work; either one alone does little.

Dental practice: check-up

What happens at the practice

A prophylaxis appointment almost always follows the same course:

  • Findings: where is plaque sitting, where do the gums bleed?
  • Removal of hard and soft deposits, including below the gum line
  • Cleaning of the spaces between the teeth
  • Polishing of the surfaces
  • Fluoridation to harden the enamel
  • Instruction: which technique and which aids suit your teeth

A practice near you

Almost every dental practice offers prophylaxis – what matters is the equipment. In the directory practices enter themselves and state which services they offer: professional cleaning, prophylaxis for children, periodontitis aftercare, a bad-breath consultation, fluoridation and sealing.

The essentials at a glance

  • Soft plaque can be brushed away – after about 24 hours it begins to harden. Once it is tartar, only the practice gets it off again.
  • The spaces between the teeth make up around a third of the tooth surface. No brush reaches there; that is what floss and interdental brushes are for.
  • Professional cleaning is generally a private service. How often it is needed depends on the risk – not on the calendar.
  • What matters in a toothpaste is the fluoride content, not the flavour. Where tooth necks are exposed, low abrasiveness matters too.

Frequently asked questions

Everything that keeps teeth and gums from becoming diseased: regular check-ups, professional cleaning, fluoridation and sealing at the practice – and daily oral hygiene at home. Together they work; either one alone does little.
Twice a year is the usual recommendation. Anyone at increased risk – after periodontitis treatment, with diabetes, with a dry mouth – needs shorter intervals. The practice sets the rhythm by what it finds, not by the calendar.
A short stocktaking at the start: where is plaque sitting, where do the gums bleed, how deep are the gum pockets? From that follows what needs doing – and the yardstick for judging next time whether it worked.
For children and adolescents aged 6 to 17, yes: examination, instruction, fluoridation and sealing of the permanent molars. For adults, professional cleaning is generally a private service; some statutory insurers contribute towards it.

The Prophylaxe-Berater is an independent information portal for patients – without advertising, and none of these pages replaces an examination. Under News you will find current reports, under FAQs the short answers. Gums and bone loss are covered by the Parodontologie-Berater, dental prostheses by the Zahnersatz-Berater.
