Bleeding gums are no reason to brush more gently

When the gums bleed during brushing, many people brush less in that spot. That is understandable and exactly the wrong way round: healthy gums do not bleed. The bleeding comes from inflammation, and the inflammation comes from plaque that has been left behind.

Brushing a spot less often leaves more plaque there. The inflammation grows stronger, and so does the bleeding. The way out leads in the other direction: thoroughly, but without pressure, and above all without skipping the interdental spaces.

If the bleeding lasts longer than two weeks, it belongs in the practice. There is often more behind it than a superficial gum inflammation.
