Polishing the teeth

A smooth surface gives new deposits less to hold on to.

The fine cleaning is followed by polishing the teeth. The previous cleaning steps have roughened the tooth surfaces, and if left unsmoothed they would quickly be occupied by bacteria and deposits again. To avoid that, the smooth surfaces of the teeth are polished to a high shine with small rubber cups and small brushes and with polishing pastes of varying grain. For the same reason the spaces between the teeth are given a further fine cleaning and smoothed with floss, superfloss or polishing strips
